Release May 2004
Only if you are invited
Hi SOS Members
Yesterday's press release bore fruit. On page 7 of today's Sydney Morning Herald
Ann Davies writes under the heading:
Have a say on Sydney's future, but only if you are invited
But as the event (the Sydney Futures
Forum) kicked off yesterday at the Australian Technology Park in Redfern the
ordinary people were thin on the ground.
The first of the forums was an invited guests-only affair made up of planners,
bureaucrats and professional representatives of organisations such as the Property
Council and the NSW Council of Social Service.
There will be other forums, but this two-day affair will be the most influential
in setting the agenda.
Save Our Suburbs, a group that advocates the politically unpopular cause of
retaining the quarter-acre block as the fundamental building unit in Sydney
was not invited.
"If future community cooperation is desired with the outcome of the planning
process, then community participation should be encouraged at an early stage
so that the community can feel some ownership with the result" its convenor,
Tony Recsei, said.
