News Release March 2006
Vital Rally
Hi SOS Members
A further rally is to be held against the draconian amendments to the Environmental
Planning and Assessment Act. As we told you the amendments will allow the Minister
of Planning, without any limit or justification, to appoint a planning administrator
or panel to carry out a Council's planning functions including setting controls
and giving consent. The Council then must reimburse the Government for the
costs and expenses of this!
The legislation has already been passed in the Legislative Assembly when Elizabeth
Farrelly (Sydney Morning Herald 22 March) reports the Opposition walked out
rather than vote. It is alleged this was because the Opposition did not wish
to be seen by the public to be voting for the bill and did not want to be seen
by developers, who give them donations, to be voting against it.
However the bill still has to be passed by the Legislative Council and it is
here where the independents might stop it. The rally is being timed to coincide
with this debate. That is why it is important for you to be there. Unfortunately
I will be out of town at the time.
PLACE: in front of Parliament in Macquarie Street
TIME: 12.30pm next Tuesday 28 March
CONVENOR: Local Government Association of NSW. Speakers will include LGA President
and Mayor of North Sydney, Genia McCaffery.
After a two year period when nothing of mine was published, the Sydney Morning Herald is printing some of my letters. I have been advised an important letter I sent in today has been short-listed for publication in tomorrow's edition. Please keep a lookout for it.
For your information the March
2006 newsletter has been posted to those SOS
members who do not have email facilities and cannot receive these news emails.
